Grand Rapids, MI – Driving on two wheels is not just for recreation. For many, motorcycles and motor scooters are cost-effective commuter vehicles. As the weather warms up, more will be on the road. Foremost® Insurance is urging all drivers to “share the road” safely with motorcycles and scooters.  

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half of all fatal motorcycle crashes, including scooters, involved another type of motor vehicle in 2008. “May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness month,” says Kevin Henry, senior product manager for Foremost motorcycle, “but motorcycle safety isn’t just for riders. All drivers can help keep motorcyclists and scooterists safe on the road.”

Here are some ways everyone can share the road safely with people on two wheels.

  1. Never share a lane with a motorcycle or scooter. It may appear like there’s enough space for a car and a motorcycle or scooter to share the same lane, but there’s not. Motorcycles and scooters need enough room to safely maneuver around problems in the road.
  2. Use a signal when turning or merging. This allows the motorcyclist or scooterist to anticipate traffic movement and find a safe lane position.  
  3. Check blind spots. Motorcycles and scooters can easily hide in a vehicle’s blind spot. Check all mirrors and spaces around the vehicle before changing lanes or turning.
  4. Allow more following distance. Motorcycles and scooters may need to make a sudden maneuver or change speeds to avoid an unexpected hazard in the roadway. Increased following distance provides the necessary space to do so.
