Grand Rapids, MI – For months known for showers and flowers, April and May also bring the threat of wildfires to many parts of the country. The warm and dry weather of spring entices many people to clean up their yards and contemplate burning the debris. Foremost® Insurance wants to help spread awareness about the risks of open burning and wildfires during this season.

According to statistics from the National Interagency Fire Center, more than 3.4 million acres of wildland burned in 2008 was a result of human actions. “Every year, many families lose their homes and possessions to wildfires,” says Kerrlynn Fisher, West Zone regional manager for HelpPoint® Claim Services. “The best way to minimize the effects of these types of disasters is to stop them from occurring in the first place. Prevention is key.”

Here are just a few things anyone can do to avoid starting wildfires:

  1. Follow the law. Many communities have burning regulations, which could include requiring burning permits and place restrictions on the times and places for open burning, as well as the items that can be burned.
  2. Watch the weather. Don’t attempt to burn on windy days or during periods of drought. Check with local fire officials to make sure the weather conditions are safe for burning.
  3. Never leave a fire unattended. Sparks could blow into leaves or grass and spread quickly.
  4. Keep water nearby. A garden hose or bucket can control the fire in an emergency and will help extinguish the fire properly and completely. This requires drowning the fire with water and stirring until everything is cold to the touch. Any charcoal should be dunked in water until it’s cold as well.
  5. Consider alternatives to burning. Yard waste can be made into mulch or composted, while newspapers and many other items can be recycled.
